SQL Server 2008

A versão beta do SQL Server 2008 disponível para download ainda não disponibiliza as ferramentas de armazenamento de entidades geográficas (geométricas).

Nestes últimos dois dias, muitas notícias foram lançadas e a expectativa quanto à possibilidade de se testar essas novas funcionalidades é grande. Fiz uma coletânea de algumas notícias interessantes.
Safe Software Announces Support for SQL Server 2008 - FME 2008 to Offer Read and Write Support for SQL Server Spatial

Vancouver, BC, November 12, 2007 - Safe Software today announced that its FME® spatial ETL (extract, transform, and load) platform will support the spatial data capabilities made available in the SQL Server 2008 November Community Technology Preview (CTP). In the FME 2008 beta, SQL Server users will be able to see firsthand how they can use FME’s powerful data translation, transformation and integration capabilities to read and write spatial data to SQL Server 2008.

Se a Safe Software está anunciando o suporte de escrita e leitura aos dados armazenados no SQL Server, o ArcGIS Data Interoperability, que utiliza o FME para acesso a uma gama de informações, também irá usufruir desse acesso. Isso quer dizer que os usuários do ArcGIS da ESRI terão acesso a esses dados rapidamente.
ISC Announces MapDotNet Support for SQL Server 2008 Spatial Availability

TALLAHASSEE, FL - November 12th, 2007 - Today, ISC announced full support for the spatial enhancements of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 in the 6.5 release of MapDotNet Server, their .NET GIS platform.

"SQL Server 2008 will set a new standard for how to deal with spatial data" said Mark Alexander, President of ISC. "When customers set out to build a spatial database with SQL Server, they are going to find that the painful experiences they may have had in the past are behind them. Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Adds Microsoft as Principal Member

Wayland, MA and San Antonio, TX, October 23, 2007 - Today, at the annual Geoint 2007 Symposium, the Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc. (OGC) announced that Microsoft Corporation has joined the consortium as a Principal Member. A Microsoft agora é um membro principal do Consorcio Open Geospatial e faz parte do grupo de empresas responsáveis pela definição de padrões que garantam a interoperabilidade entre sistemas que manipulam dados geográficos.
SQL Server 2008 Status Update

I was certainly confused when I read four different press releases (Safe, Manifold, SpatialPoint, AWhere) noting support for the new version of Microsoft's SQL Server. I figured that meant there'd be a public beta or some announcement from Microsoft.

We contacted Microsoft and learned that CTP5 (the first public beta of SQL Server 2008) with support for spatial is not out yet. It's expected in the next two weeks. Redmond Channel Partner Online notes that, too:

The next preview of SQL Server 2008 with new support for spatial data types and a new Resource Governor feature is slated to hit in a week or two, according to Microsoft.

Also of note:
Integration with Microsoft's Virtual Earth will be delivered via a separate SDK with the next CTP, Ajenstat said. At TechEd in Barcelona, the company will trot out a list of partners for its location-application push including ESRI, Spatial point, Space Software, and SWSoft.

SQL Server "Katmai" com suporte espacial


Foi divulgado na Microsoft Business Intelligence Conference que a nova versão do SQL Server 2008, apelidado de "Katmai", terá suporte nativo às feições espaciais (geográficas).
Scheduled to ship in 2008, Katmai will be the first version of SQL Server to support spatial data and operations natively. Pretty cool! Finally, support for Spatial as a first class data type with indexing.
O tipo de dado geográfico armazenado no SQL Server 2008 será compatível com o estelecido pelo consórcio Open Geospatial (OGC) e a especificação Simple Features for SQL. Além disso o Katmai terá o suporte a aproximadamente 70 métodos/funções.
There are Community Preview and early alpha builds being tested outside of Microsoft right now, but if you aren't testing there is limited information that has been made public. Here are a few bullets that are OK to share at this point:
  • Spatial will be supported in the next release of SQL Server (code named Katmai) as system data types
  • Katmai is scheduled to ship in 2008 and will most likely be called SQL Server 2008
  • Katmai spatial will support two models: a “Flat Earth” planar data type and a “Round Earth” geodetic data type
  • The Flat Earth data type (GEOMETRY) will support the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Simple Features for SQL Specification with support for approximately 70 spatial methods/functions
  • There will be spatial indexes for both planar and geodetic data types
